In the first-person point of view, a character in the story serves as narrator, using I or we as the story plays out. This narrator might be a relatively minor character, observing the action, as the character Nick does in F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby. Or, he might be the main protagonist of the story, such as Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye. Why Writers Use First-Person Point of View There are a number of good reasons for using the first-person point of view in fiction. Used correctly, it can be an extremely effective tool for storytelling: You are writing a piece of fiction that is, at least to some degree, autobiographical. You want to be sure the reader sees the world you have created exactly as you experienced it. An example of this approach is Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar, in which the main character is a thinly disguised version of the poet herself.You want the world youve created to be seen from a unique outsiders point of view. Ulysses by James Joyce is a famous example of this. Much of the novel is written using third-person point of view, but several episodes use first-person narration. Pros and Cons The first-person point of view allows readers to feel close to a specific characters point of view; it lets the reader in, so to speak. It also provides writers with a tool for crafting the readers perspective on the fictional world. Using first-person also can be easier for beginning writers since everyone is accustomed to telling stories from their own personal point of view. However, the first-person point of view limits readers to that one perspective. They really know the inâs and outâs of their company and has a successful track record in their field of expertise. These types of people seek to share their knowledge with others by being a mentor. They want to help others succeed so they or upper management starts a program where a mentor can be matched up with a more junior employee (the mentoree). The objective is to give the mentee a step up by teaching them new skill sets or exposing them to new opportunities to use their strengths. Think of a mentor as a tutor. The shortcuts they can show you can help you ace your career. A working moms lifestyle improves with shortcuts so in your next job search look for this perk to get ahead of the class and in life. Career Counseling When I became a working mom seven years ago I realized I hated my career path. This kind of situation would have been perfect for career counseling (instead my company hired a coach, which is how I became a working mom coach). First, a career counselor can take a look at where Iâve been, what projects Iâve worked on and determine my strengths. Next, we could brainstorm on what Iâd like to start working on which could lead me to a new career path. Performing this kind of work at home is an energy zapper. Looking for a new job or career can be a full-time job and as a working mom, we have enough work to do. When a company offers this perk they are more likely to keep their employees which saves everyone money, time and energy. Cross-Training to Develop Skills Not Directly Related to Your Job So letâs say that a career counselor helps you find a new career path. How fantastic would it be if your company gave you time out of your work week to train in a new department to learn new skills? This kind of experience would be incredible! If you apply for a job in this new department youð already have the skills to do the job. Most likely you wonât leave the company (this makes the company happy) and you get to start a new career or job. Or maybe this new skill will bring a fresh perspective on things in your current job and your skill sets. Itâs a win-win for everyone with no extra time, money, or energy spent outside of normal working hours on training. Looking out for Your Self-Care During Off-Hours Some of the best places to work are interested in how to protect your downtimes such as creating policies or offering guidance on off-hours use of work-issued smartphones and laptops. It is the companyâs equipment so theyâre taking charge about how to use them. Other companies have set policies about email-free weekends. The company wants workers to refrain from sending non-critical business messages from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday. It is suggested that if an email has to be set use a delay-send mode so the email goes out the next business day. This is great because the person who wants to send the email can write down what they are thinking so they donât forget it but they follow the policy with the delay-send. These kinds of companies understand the value in caring for your family as well as your own self-care. When you feel rested from the daily grind the company knows youâll come back fresh on Monday and ready to work.

Jacobs is a journalist and author of four New York Times bestsellers, including The Year of Living Biblically, Drop Dead Healthy, and The Know-It-All. We sat down with A.J. to ask about what inspired this latest adventure, what surprised him most during the process, and how we can all be a little more grateful for the little things we take for granted.1. In two sentences or less, can you sum up the âbig ideaâ of your book?Our coffee â" as well as every other item in our lives â" only exists because thousands of things went right on its journey. By acknowledging this, we can fight our brainâs built-in negative bias and be happier and more productive.2. What surprised you the most in your research?The sheer nu mber of people required for something as simple as a cup of coffee. For instance, I thanked the trucker who drove the coffee beans to my local coffee shop. But he couldnât have done his job without the road, so I had to thank the folks who paved the road. But the road needs yellow lines so the truck doesnât veer into oncoming traffic. So I thanked the folks who made the paint. It doesnât just take a village to make a cup of coffee. It takes the world. I try to practice six degrees of gratitude.3. Did an event from your personal life inspire or affect the book?Yes, I can thank my son for the idea. A couple of years ago, I started this ritual before meals. Iâd say a prayer of thanksgiving. But Iâm not religious, so instead of thanking God, Iâd thank some of the people involved in my meal. Iâd say âIâd like to thank the farmer who grew these tomatoes. And the cashier at the grocery store who sold me these tomatoes.â Then one day, my 10-year-old son said to me, âYo u know dad, those people canât hear you. If you really cared, youâd go and thank them in person.â I said to myself, thatâs actually a good book idea. So I spent the next six months traveling the world thanking people in person for my coffee. I focused on coffee because itâs so simple but so important. I couldnât live without it. Food, shelter, coffee.4. Do you have a favorite quote or motto that guides your life?I like the phrase âJust Do It.â But I would revise it to say: âJust do it, as long as youâve properly weighed the costs and benefits to both you and society at large.â I know. Not quite as catchy. But I think we need some more rational thinking in this world. The gut can be a dangerous thing. Our president uses his gut, and Iâm not a fan of where itâs gotten us.5. What was your most humbling moment?About 15 years ago, I posed for a nude photo that was then printed in Esquire. That was way out of my comfort zone. And probably everyone elseâs comfor t zone as well. It happened because the editor in chief of Esquire asked the actress Mary Louise Parker to pose nude for the magazine. She said she would, but on one condition: The editor of the article also pose nude, so he could experience the vulnerability and objectification as well. I was the editor of the article. My boss told me to do it. So I did. Iâm actually very impressed with Mary Louise Parkerâs idea - it definitely gave me a new understanding of being on the other side of the camera.6. What trivial trick, talent, or feat can you do to impress people?I can do cloverleaf tongue. This is when you can fold your tongue into the shape of a cloverleaf. I just did some research, and it turns out thereâs a heated debate over whether this skill is genetic, or if it can be taught. Iâm hoping it can be taught. I think everyone has the right to cloverleaf tongue.7. Whatâs something that is really easy for most people that you find really challenging?Tying shoelaces. I me an, I know how to do it. I just find it super-annoying and irrational. Itâs why I use elastic shoelaces. I wish that I could wear Velcro sneakers without hearing jokes about how Iâm either a toddler or a 78-year-old Sarasota retiree. But soon Iâll be old enough to pull them off.8. What is one book that you wish everyone in the world would read?Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker. I donât agree with all his points, but I endorse the gist: Progress is real. The past was violent, disease-ridden, sexist, homophobic, smelly, you name it. We shouldnât glorify the past. In fact, itâs dangerous. It breeds nihilism, the feeling that nothing is getting better. Instead, we should be proud of how far weâve come as a species, and inspired to solve the many, many yet-to-be-solved problems.9. What would you like readers to take away from your book?That being thankful isnât just a polite thing to do. I think itâs one of the secrets to happiness. In my book, I quote a Benedictine mo nk who says âHappiness doesnât lead to gratitude. Gratitude leads to happiness.â Also, Iâd love for readers to take away the name for that cardboard sleeve that goes around the cup and keeps your fingers from burning.
