| Read Our Blog Read Our Blog Blog Secretary Shinseki Resigns from U.S Department of Veterans Affairs Bridget Altenburg May 30, 2014 Veterans Forward zero Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned from the U.S Department of Veterans Affairs today after learning about systemic points throughout the biggest hospital system within the country. Hospital directors lied about wait occasions to satisfy their efficiency objectives and earn a bonus. He called the breach of integrity âirresponsible, indefensible and unacceptableâ and took responsibility for the problems. I happened to be there when Secretary Shinseki gave his last speech in entrance of an appreciative audience on the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans. Five occasions we stood and cheered a person who has led the charge to finish veteran homelessness, no matter his challenges as the top of the countryâs largest hospital system. I served with General Shinseki in Bosnia. That is to say, as a 20-something lieutenant, General Shinseki was my 4 star commander. And but even from far away, I acknowledged what a compassionate chief he was. He is a person who speaks truth to power. He insisted tons of of thousands of troops have been essential to invade Iraq back in 2003. And he was proper. He can also be a person whose humility pervades his work. Under his tenure veteran homelessness decreased 24% during a recession which saw homelessness overall enhance. Thanks to the work of Secretary Shinseki and tons of of organizations nationwide, we can really look ahead to a future when there isn't any such thing as veteran homelessness. As Secretary Shinseki leaves and we wait for one more secretary to be nominated and confirmed, letâs not forget the great that he completed. When he started in 2009, we didnât even know the dimensions of veteran homelessness. Today, we not only know the scale, we have proven options and assets to get veterans off the street and into stable housing. We have the HUD (U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development)-VAS H (Veterans Affairs Supportive Housing), a novel collaboration between the VA and HUD that gives housing vouchers to homeless veterans. We have veterans courts that search treatment alternatives to incarceration, a challenge homeless veterans often face. And we've new ache remedy protocols that reduce opiate dependency that results in substance abuse, one other problem faced by homeless veterans. It was Secretary Shinseki who sought the basis causes of veteran homelessness and led the best way in bringing new and expanded resources to bear. The Veterans Forward program at National Able Network works with over 100 homeless and at-threat veterans. We use the sources Secretary Shinseki constructed and expanded, on top of our own career training applications to get them employed and into steady housing. For me, that is Eric Shinsekiâs legacy.
