Dick Bolles didnt show up fifteen minutes early.  10 minutes early he wasnt there.  Two minutes early he wasnt there. Three minutes late, I decided to start.  Lots of people were on, lots of questions were coming in. I was honestly hoping Dick was okay. we had communicated a number of times about this webinar and I knew he had it on his calendar. Turns out, he was great.  I found out, twenty minutes into the call (when he came on), WHY he was late.  I dont want to spoil it for you he tells all when he joins the webinar. This interview with Dick was different than I expected.  I wasnt quite sure what to talk about or ask, but the audience came through and we spent the entire time on questions. His answers, with over forty years of experience in the job seeker space, were different than I expected.  They surprised me.  I think they might surprise you, too. What Masters students need to know about the Grad Fair 2017 University of Manchester Careers Blog Your Masters degree ends in September/October, so the autumn recruitment fairs happen at just the right time to help you find a job, right? Wrong! If youre going to find a job at a recruitment fair starting this year, the fair you need is the summer Graduate Recruitment Fair next week. Why? Here is a big difference between the types of jobs advertised at these fairs. Autumn recruitment fairs are primarily aimed at larger employers looking to fill their graduate schemes, normally a year in advance. Therefore, the majority of jobs on offer at the autumn fairs start in the autumn of the following year October 2018 which is a long way off if you graduate with a Masters at the end of 2017. The Grad Fair is mainly full of employers looking to fill posts immediately or in the next few months. Some are large employers, where they are looking for a few new recruits, sometimes because they havent filled all those vacancies first advertised last autumn. However, most of the recruiters at the summer fairs are medium-sized employers with immediate vacancies. For these employers, its very hard for them to predict whether they will have vacancies in 12 months time, but they do know they will have job vacancies over the next few months. What if I dont want a job until after I finish? This  can  sometimes cause a problem, if the recruiter wants someone to start straight away. However, its worth discussing with them whether they are prepared to wait until youve completed your dissertation or project. They may be more interested in the right person than an immediate start date. Also, in some cases, they may be more than happy to look at a slightly later start date the summer fairs might have come around a bit early for them too! This is the time to practise your negotiation skills. Will there be the right jobs there for me? For some of you, yes. For others, definitely no. You really cant generalise about Masters postgrads. If youve come straight from an undergrad degree with little work experience,  the fairs may be  a very good starting point for you. If youre an experienced professional,  you probably wont find the perfect job at these fairs, though you may be able to get some good inside information on employers in which youre interested. If you are looking for a very specialist role, or one in a highly competitive sector like museums, the media or consultancy, the employers youre looking for may not be at the fairs though its worth checking beforehand you never know. Will it be worth my time coming to the fairs? Try reading my advice on the main postgraduate careers website and make your own mind up. How to make the most of careers events as a postgraduate If you decide to  come to the fair, this will also give you some clues about the right questions to ask, to avoid that well, that was a waste of time feeling (something I often hear from postgrads who have taken the wrong approach  at recruitment fairs). How will I know if the right employers will be at the fairs? By looking at  who’s coming and what degree subjects they are looking for. On the Job by Anita Bruzzese The 5S concept Will a Misplaced Stapler Get You in Trouble Watch out: 5S may be coming to your workplace. And if it does, well, you have my condolences.I first read about 5S several months ago, and hoped it was a bad blip on the radar screen, sort of like a new High School Musical cast being assembled.But no, there it was on the front page of the Wall Street Journal this morning. For those who haven't heard of 5S (sort, straighten, shine, standardize and sustain), it was originally designed for the manufacturing floor as a way to keep things neat and tidy to increase efficiency. Everything has a specific place, and unnecessary stuff is tossed so that no time is wasted looking for something, seen as especially important when people share a workspace.Now, 5S has made its way to the upper floors and into the cubicles, and I'm getting a very bad feeling about it.Don't get me wrong. I'm all for keeping chaos to a minimum in the workplace, and disorganized, messy work spaces aren't good for anyone. But as someone who has covered the workplace for decades, who has interviewed hundreds of bosses and hundreds of employees over the years, I think this idea is going to be about as welcome as a weekly performance evaluation.Why? At a time when people are so concerned about their jobs, when companies need every mind engaged in coming up with new and innovative ideas in order to remain competitive, when bosses are just trying to keep employees focused and not watching the stock market go nuts -- we're going to focus on whether a desk is neat? Or whether a person's sweater should be allowed on the back of a chair?I realize some people think this concept is great, and a perfect solution to the problems of inefficiency and disorganization among team members. But I've seen this thing cause a backlash before, and I just believe when people are being asked to work longer hours, with little or no pay raise or bonus this year, that telling them they put the stapler in the wrong drawer is going to be a bit grating on already frayed nerves.If you ask a couple who has been together a long time what the secret to their relationship is, many of them might reply it's being respectful, kind, communicating well and valuing what the other person has to bring to the relationship. I'd agree with all of those things. And I think most bosses would agree that's what they also value in their team members.Do they want to be policing the office looking for points to deduct for lack of neatness? Are employees going to be trying to find ways to keep a picture of their kid or a beloved pet from being banned from their workspace instead of focusing on their work? Will 5S only lead to lower morale -- and lead to greater inefficiency, rather than improve it?I sure hope not. I sure hope that companies don't go overboard on 5S at a time when we need everyone engaged, enthusiastic, energized and upbeat (the 3E's and 1U method) -- but I'm not counting on it.What do you think of 5S? Learn from Recruiters

Learn from Recruiters Not only is Danielle Powers a Recruiter, she is also a savvy business development professional.   She recently posted a comment here and her message is very strong, so I am referencing it here: I send out hundreds of educational and relevant letters, make phones calls, follow up emails etc   to receive a handful of responses .   Then I go one step further and explain in terms they (the job seeking client) can understand that I send out 200 letters get 10 potential connections and 2 true business opportunities and then say now how many jobs are you applying to weekly, what networking, company research and follow up steps are you making?   Bottom line, good things come from hard work and being persistant and CONSISTENT in your efforts. This is really about taking your search seriously.    Job search  is riddled with rejection.   That is part of the game, so develop tough skin. We need to learn from others, watch what they are doing and try and adapt for ourselves.   Recruiters, such as Danielle, have a good perspective.   Learn from them, and remember, like anything else we do in life, get multiple perspectives and ask WHY.

Check out this career tip to help you dream big! We all know the saying, “If you start small, youll get small.” I always encourage my career coaching clients to think outside the box with their career ideas and really dream big up front. My career coaching client Farah did just that when she shared on a group coaching call a great way to think creatively about alternative career ideas. She suggested to use Thesaurus.com as a way to input keywords related to jobs that interest you and find other words that you can search by to find additional types of jobs that might be a fit for you. Plug in architecture and see what else comes up with (design, building, construction, etc.). Search for the career youre interested in and see what alternate or related career ideas it helps you come up with. I love this idea to utilize another great career tool. Thanks Farah for sharing!
