Martha Stewarts career success lessons become a musical

Martha Stewarts career success lessons become a musicalMartha Stewarts career success lessons become a musicalActor Ryan Raftery has made a living out of coveringthe careersof American business moguls through song and dance - and now in his upcoming show, hes going to channel the life of the woman who made domestic perfection a multi-million business Martha Stewart. Raftery already covered the careersof reality TV executive Andy Cohen and Vogue Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, and as the final entry forhis Titans of Media trilogy, he will use Stewarts story to chart the rise and fall (and rise) of Americas first self-made female billionaire. The show is set to have a five-show run at Joes Pub in New York City starting August 7.Stewarts careeris full of Shakespearean twists that are rich for a musical. It was Stewarts former best friend who gave damning testimony in Stewartsinsider-trading trial in 2004, sending the domestic doyenne to jail.A prison stint would have tanked many otherbei careers, but Stewart used her time behind bars to win friends she made jam from the crabapples on the campus and taught her fellow prisoners how to make ceramics. Through Stewarts resilience and business savvy, she mounted a comeback of merchandise deals and partnerships to finally rejoin theboard of her namesake company in 2011.Along the way, she embraced an innovative approach to branding, moving beyond the perfect hostess theme she had pursued before. She grew her reach with unexpectedpartnerships, including Martha Snoops Potluck Dinner Party, a variety cooking show she recently did with rapper Snoop Dogg.According to Raftery, the musicalwill start its story on the day Stewartreported to prison and then will trace Stewarts humble beginnings from 15-year-old New Jersey schoolgirl to lifestylebusiness mogul who changed the way we live our lives by daring us to try harder. His musical follows another show thats charting the rise of female pioneers, War Paint, a musical about the ri valry between 20th century beauty mogulsHelena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden.I had to choose someone on the same level of influence as Andy and Anna, Raftery told Ladders. What I found so fascinating with Stewartis the earnestness she has in her demonstrations. She really wants to helpAnna sells a fantasy. You can read Vogue every day for the rest of your your life, but that doesnt mean youll be able to afford that Chanel suit. But Martha sells attainable perfectionism. She encourages people to create their own world.Raftery will tell histale of American ambition and hubristhrough parodying thetunes of Beyonc, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Metallica and Adele. For Stewarts post-prison comeback number, he adaptedMetallicas Enter Sandman. The energy of heavy death metal is what Stewart would need to rebuild her brand. The feeling of that song is extraordinarily aggressive and Martha is very, very aggressive in how she handles herself, her business, Raftery said. Shes 75 years old and shes not s lowing down.As an ardent fan of Stewart, Raftery said he would welcome Stewart binnenseeing his show, but he admits that her presence would leave him anxious. Not only because Im performing a show about her, but because shes an expert in MarthaStewart, he said.If I did something whereshes like, thats not right, or oh no I never said that, or oh look at the pants hes wearing, it would be really nerve-wracking but it would be an honor to have her come and see it.Heres hoping that Raftery breaks throughStewarts calculated, curated persona that built her a media empire to find the unique woman underneath who takes bad pictures of iceberg lettuce and enjoys using her drone to view her vegetable garden.

How to Tell Your Employer You Are Entering Rehab

How to Tell Your Employer You Are Entering Rehab How to Tell Your Employer You Are Entering Rehab In one memorable episode ofThe Office, Steve Carrells character Michael Scott organizes a workplace intervention for his alcoholic employee Meredith - and his so-called surprise party for people with addictions is a total disaster.Michael Scott may be a mid-level manager at a fictional paper company, but his actions do reflect a reality in the workplace Nearly 1 in 10 full-time workers in the United States has recently had a substance abuse problem, according to 2015 findings by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The lingering stigma surrounding drug and alcohol addiction can impede many addicts from seeking effective treatment. Its difficult to tell your employer that you need to leave work for weeks or months to enter rehab. If you are struggling to get the conversation started, try some of these tipsKnow Your RightsThanks to the Family and Medical Leave A ct (FMLA) of 1993, employees dont have to choose between going to treatment and keeping their jobs. The FMLA allowspeople to take a job-protected leave of up to 12 weeks for family and medical reasons, one of which can be drug or alcohol rehab. (Learn more about whether you are FMLA-eligible.)Do Your Homework Before Talking to Your anfhrerGive plenty of consideration to the circumstances of your employment- How long have you been employed here, and what is your status of employment (full- or part-time, exempt or nonexempt, etc.)?- What does your employee handbook say regarding leave of absence policies?- Do you have a sense of mutual trust and rapport with your higher-ups?Such considerations should factor into any decision about how much information to volunteer. In some cases, sharing more information than is necessary can introduce additional anxiety about an interaction that is already anxiety-producing. Or, that information may come back to haunt you later on when youre back on the job and successfully in retitelbildy. You should also research and confirm the following factors ahead of time so that the conversation goes as smoothly as possible- The exact dates of your time away from work- Your availability to work during treatment, if any- How you are preparing for your absence so that it causes the least amount of disruption to workflow or strain on your supervisor and colleaguesThink about what youll say to your boss before sitting down with them. You may also benefit from consulting with an addiction professional before the meeting. Some rehab programs have counselors on staff who can help you prepare for these sorts of conversations.Decide Whether to Reveal to Your Boss That Youre Going to RehabAs an employee with a health problem, you are entitled to the same degree of privacy as any other employee. You are not legally required to tell your employer the specifics of your condition. In fact, many people entering rehab choose not to divulge this factto th eir employer. You can always request an unpaid leave of absence for personal medical or non-medical reasons - no further explanation needed. Alternatively, if youve accumulated enough vacation or sick days to cover your time in rehab, you can simply request the time off without needing to ask for medical leave.Be Clear About Your Motivations and Treatment DetailsIf you choose to divulge that youre going to rehab for drugs or alcohol, consider mentioning the following- Your apprehension about the conversation and why you feel that way, whether its the stigma of the disease, the fear that your boss may lose confidence in your abilities, etc.- Your desire to be honest about your medical decision, given that your boss may have concerns about your request or may need a doctors note or other information as verification- How treatment will improve your job performance and reduce absenteeism- A drug-free workplace policy (if there is one) that you take seriously- The provisions of the FMLA , if applicable- A request for confidentiality about your decision to enter rehab- Your enthusiasm about returning to work after rehabAvoid going into any detail about the history of your addiction or your uncertainties about the treatment process and whether treatment will help. Try to answer any questions honestly but also as succinctly as possible. Most importantly, keep the tone positive. Remember that your boss has enough to manage. Too many personal details may send the message that they now have another problem on their hands, which is the last thing either of you need - a reminder that comes by way of Michael Scott.Anna Ciulla is the vice president of clinical and medical services atBeach House Center for Recovery.

Tips for Business Owners Returning to the Workforce

Tips for Business Owners Returning to the WorkforceTips for Business Owners Returning to the WorkforceTips for Business Owners Returning to the WorkforceBeing your own boss is an almost-universal fantasy. Who doesnt dream of being self-employed, calling the shots, never having to ask permission for time off, or being able to fire anyone who pisses you off? Owning a small geschftliches miteinander can indeed be an exhilarating experience. But its no guarantee of happiness or success. About half of new businesses fail within their first four or five years, and others are sold once their owners discover that the entrepreneurial lifestyle has at least as many lows as highs.(Time off? Forget about it) Whatever the reason, many former business owners, myself included, decide to get the hell out and run back to those long-lost friends a steady paycheck and employer-paid benefits. And then comes the dilemma of how to apply for a non-executive position when your last job title was Owner, Opera tor, President, and CEO. Having launched, operated, and sold a small business several years ago, Id like to share what I learned out about the job search when youre transitioning back into the workforce after being self-employed. Your Cover Letter and InterviewsRemember how I mentioned that being your own boss is everyones fantasy? That probably includes your future hiring managers, who will likely wonder how you could ever be happy returning to work for someone else after you got to live the fantasy. (Ha) So its important to convey in your cover letter, and especially in your interviews, that you really do want to be back in the workforce, and specifically, that you want the job youre applying for.Present your business-owning past as a valuable experience that prepared you for the next job, rather than as some boss-free utopia youre sad to leave.A good way to do this is to prepare a story that communicates three thingsHow good you are at X X being a skill thats important in the job youre applying for. That owning a business prevented you from doing as much X as you would have liked. You really look forward to a role where you can get back to X.For example, lets say X = MarketingMarketing is one of my greatest strengths and favorite aspects of business, but I wasnt able to focus on marketing as much as I would have liked when I owned my business. There was always a shipping glitch or an accounts payable issue or some other crisis that pulled me away. So Im excited to get back to a role like this one, where I can apply my marketing expertise to help build your brand and your bottom line. What About Your Resume? While the job title President on your resumemay be accurate, its not helpful in communicating your value to your next employer. It might even get you rejected because you appear to be way overqualified.Since you were your own boss, you can retroactively (and truthfully) give yourself almost any job title, depending on where you want to be nextMarketing Com munications Specialist, Customer Support Supervisor, Accounting Manager, Purchasing Agent, Equipment Repairperson, Quality Assurance Specialist, HR Generalist, Event Planner... right on down to ChiefCook and Bottle Washer, as my Irish grandmother used to say.If youre applying for that marketing job, you could say something likeMarketing Communications Specialist Yourname Enterprises, Inc.April 2006 to July 2009Owned and operated a tafelgeschirr business, holding sole responsibilityfor marketing communications, branding, PR, advertising, search engine optimizationBuilt customer base from 0 to 70 clients, achieving annual gross sales of $150,000Established email marketing campaign that generated an average of 30 leads and 12 new customers a monthAs a job seeker, your goal is to demonstrate your value to your next employer, regardless of what your old business card might have said. These ideas worked for me, but Im sure there are plenty of others. If youve transitioned from business own ership back into the role of employee, or hired someone who did, what would you advise?

These were the craziest workplace surveillance stories of 2017

These were the craziest workplace surveillance stories of 2017These were the craziest workplace surveillance stories of 2017New advances in technology are making it easier than ever for ur employers to track our movements, whereabouts, and employability. Through information that we knowingly or unwittingly provide about ourselves, employers can make small and big decisions about our careers. Is this creepy and invasive? Depends on who you ask. While these surveillance tools can make our jobs more convenient, they can come at a high cost to our privacy, creating Orwellian nightmares. As we reflect on the future of work, heres a list of last years wildest workplace surveillance stories that should make us worry about whats to come.Brace yourselves1) Employees willingly getting microchipped for convenienceWould you get microchipped so that you could eat chips faster from a vending machine? A majority of employees at Three Square Market, a Wisconsin tech company, agreed to do this in July, a reported first for the United States. With a microchip implanted in their hands, these cyborgs can now enter the building, log onto their computers, and get chips from the vending machine with the wave of a hand. While this makes their jobs more convenient, it makes it much easier for their employers to track them. Although the CEO of Three Square Market says that the data is encrypted and secure, thats a lot of health and productivity information youre entrusting to your employer.2) Employers using big data to predict which employees will get sickSome companies including retailer Wal-Mart are using outside firms to look up how you shop, what you eat, and what prescription drugs you buy to algorithmically predict which employees are fruchtwein likely to get a health condition, according to a February investigation by the Wall Street Journal.Heres an example of how one wellness firm can collect information from your insurer and other companies to figure out youre pregnant before you re ready to know youre pregnant To determine which employees might soon get pregnant, Castlight recently launched a new product that scans insurance claims to find women who have stopped filling birth-control prescriptions, as well aswomen who have made fertility-related searches on Castlights health app, the Journal reported.Yes, you can opt out of the prenatal care you might start receiving if the algorithm guesses incorrectly, but you canelend opt out of the Big Brother feeling that someone is watching you.(Clarification 1/11/18 Castlight SVP Kristin Anne Torres Mowat clarifies that the data Castlight provides is anonymized of identifying characteristics and aggregated, so that an employer will not see which individuals might be pregnant.)3) Companies reportedly preventing older job seekers from seeing job listingsCompanies may be making decisions about your employability before you know a job exists.A recent investigation by ProPublica andThe New York Timesfound that dozens of t he nations top employers - includingAmazon, Verizon, Goldman Sachs, UPS, and Facebook - are using Facebook, Google, and LinkedIn to create recruitment ads that target only younger job seekers. The report outlines how older job seekers would not see job listings even if they wanted to apply to them through this age-based ad targeting. Is the targeting of one group the illegal exclusion of another? The law is unclear on when targeting younger job seekers becomes age discrimination. While some companies backed down after being alerted to the targeted ads, others defended the practice. Facebook said its age-based ad targeting is an accepted industry practice.4) A productivity tool that takes pictures of employees every 10 minutes to make sure they are workingHow can employers tell if their remote workers are slacking off or not? Talent management company Crossover has built a productivity tool, WorkSmart, that is seen as one solution. Through frequent screenshots of workstations and num bers on workers app use and keystrokes, WorkSmart can give employers a focus score and an intensity score to judge their employees. While this may make some of us extremely self-conscious, Crossover thinks youll get over it and see it as betterment. The response is OK, Im being monitored, but if the company is paying for my time how does it matter if its recording what Im doing? Its only for my betterment, Crossovers Sanjeev Patni told the Guardian about how employees adjust to being monitored.5) More of us are using schmelzglas to track each other at workHow many of your coworkers and competitors are tracking your emails? The answer is more and more each day. A 2017 Wired investigationinto email trackers found that more of us are using trackers to know exactly when, where, and how often we are reading each others emails.According to email intelligence company OMC, one in five conversational emails are now being tracked. We have been in touch with users that were tracked by their spou ses, business partners, competitors, Florian Seroussi, the founder of OMC told Wired. Its the wild, wild west out there. What are the ethics of only one party knowing they are being tracked by email? The dangers within laypersons and employees using trackers have yet to be fully explored. The bottom lineThis list is only a jump-off point for all the tomorrows that are happening and have not yet happened in the workplace. As technology continues to advances, the one prediction that Im certain of is that we will continue to be amazed at how far businesses will go to track job seekers and employees.

The AH-64 Apache Helicopter

The AH-64 Apache HelicopterThe AH-64 Apache HelicopterThe AH-64 Apache helicopter is the Armys primary attack helicopter, and is considered the most durable helicopter in military aviation history. Made by the Boeing Co., the Apache first entered Army service in 1984. Its built for combat situations and can withstand rounds as large as 23 mm. The Apache has been an active part of nearly all Army operations since its introduction, playing a particularly key role in conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Crew and Artillery of the Apache Helicopter The 50-foot-long Apache flies with a crew of two a pilot and co-pilot gunner. They carry out armed reconnaissance missions. The helicopter has radar-guided Hellfire anti-tank missiles, an arsenal with which to complete its primary mission destroying high-value targets with precision strikes. It does that job with a Target Acquisition Designation System (TADS) tied to the head movements of the pilots so that the cameras point where they look. The system includes a night vision sensor, a laser range finder and laser target designator, a thermal imaging infrared camera, and a daylight television camera. Images from TADS are superimposed onto the crews helmet-mounted optical sights. Apache Versus the Black Hawk Helicopter The Apache is one of two well-known Army helicopters, the other being theBlack Hawk helicopter, named for the Native American warrior. The Black Hawk has been part of Army operations since 1974, entering formal service in 1978. While the Black Hawk is known for its quiet flight and durability, its louder and slower than the Apache. Where the Apache holds a crew of two soldiers, the Black Hawk holds a crew of up to five. The Black Hawk is primarily used for transporting troops and materials, while the Apache is built for combat, specifically for attack missions. So while some pilots prefer one over the other, the two choppers are designed for different purposes. Apache Helicopters in Action Apaches fired the first shots of Operation Desert Storm, a military campaign launched against Iraq after its invasion of Kuwait in 1990. Eight helicopters, manned by pilots from the 101st Airborne Division, flew 90 miles from their base in Saudi Arabia, observing a radio blackout until 10 seconds before hitting their targets. The choppers destroyed early-warning radar installations in western Iraq, clearing the way for 1,000 U.S. Air Force jets to cross undetected into that nation for bombing runs. Next-Generation Apache The makers of the helicopter introduced a next-generation model, the Apache Longbow, in 1997. It uses a millimeter wave radar system for targeting that is four times more accurate and seven times safer than the original. The choppers onboard computer system can identify more than 128 potential targets and winnow that down to the 16 most important, which it then transmits to other helicopters in the assault team. Based on the data, an attack can be launched within 30 sec onds of the radar scan. The Apache is armed with an M261 rocket launcher with 19 tubes. Both the Apache and Apache Longbow use dual General Electric T700-GE-701 1698 shp turboshaft engines and feature a four-blade articulated rotor system.

Learn About First-Person Point of View in Fiction

Learn About First-Person Point of View in Fiction Learn About First-Person Point of View in Fiction Point of view in fiction simply means who tells the story. In the first-person  point of view, a character in the story serves as narrator, using I or we as the story plays out. This narrator might be a relatively minor character, observing the action, as the character Nick does in F. Scott Fitzgeralds The Great Gatsby. Or, he might be the main protagonist of the story, such as Holden Caulfield in J.D. Salingers The Catcher in the Rye. Why Writers Use First-Person Point of View There are a number of good reasons for using the first-person point of view in fiction. Used correctly, it can be an extremely effective tool for storytelling: You are writing a piece of fiction that is, at least to some degree, autobiographical. You want to be sure  the reader sees the world you have created exactly as you experienced it. An example of this approach is Sylvia Plaths The Bell Jar,  in which the main character is a thinly disguised version of the poet herself. You want the world youve created to be seen from a unique outsiders point of view. Both The Catcher in the Rye and Harper Lees classic, To Kill a Mockingbird, are told from the perspective of youngsters whose observations of the adult world are both naive and incisive. No third-person narrator or adult storyteller could bring the same qualities to these stories. You want the reader to experience only a carefully edited set of story elements and to experience them only from a particular point of view. This technique is effective in both literature and genre fiction. It often is  used by romance and mystery writers to provide the reader with a sense that they are participating in the drama and uncertainty experienced by the main characters. You want to mislead readers and then- in some cases, at least- surprise them with a dramatic revelation. While it is possible to mislead readers with the third-person voice, it is much more effective to do so through an unreliable  narrator. Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye is a classic example of the unreliable narrator. Another extremely effective use of the unreliable narrator is in Agatha Christies renowned mystery, The Murder of Roger Ackroyd. Multiple Points of View Some novels will mix points of view. This is more common in longer novels or more complex novels that involve multiple stories happening simultaneously. The author may decide each story has different needs in terms narration. Ulysses by James Joyce is a famous example of this. Much of the novel is written using third-person point of view, but several episodes use first-person narration. Pros and Cons   The  first-person point of view allows  readers to feel close to a specific characters point of view; it lets the reader in, so to speak. It also provides writers with a tool for crafting the readers perspective on the fictional world. Using first-person also can  be easier for beginning writers since everyone is accustomed to telling stories from their own personal point of view. However, the first-person point of view limits  readers to that one perspective. They only can know what the narrator knows, and this can make telling the story more difficult, depending on the plot and other characters involved.

10 Things You Should Never Wear to a Job Interview

10 Things You Should Never Wear to a Job Interview 10 Things You Should Never Wear to a Job Interview Going to work and job interviews used to require wearing a suit all of the time. You had your work clothes and your casual clothes. Today’s workforce faces the interesting challenge of having to wear different outfits depending on the business culture’s dress code. Instead of explaining every dress code around the world, then leaving you to guess when a dress code applies, see this list of 10 things you should never wear to a job interview. 10. Visible underwear The root form of the word “underwear” is “under” meaning “under your clothes” (ie. meant not to be seen). There are casual dress styles in which male and female underwear can be seen. These styles are not appropriate for any job interview. You are going to a business to convince them why you should be a valuable (and paid) employee. You want the focus of attention to be on your resume and why they should hire you for the job, not your undergarments. 9. Flip-flops and sneakers Nothing says, “I am running an errand and I do not care” more than wearing flip-flops or sneakers to a job interview. First, no one wants to see your toes or smell your feet. Next, wearing sneakers, or flip-flops, looks like you just threw something on without preparing to look your best. Why would you not want to look your best to get a job? Yes, some work cultures do permit this attire once you are hired. However, for the initial job interview, you should present yourself professionally, so they know what you believe is “looking your very best”. 8. Shorts or cut-off pants You probably noticed by now that the clothes mentioned above sound like things you wear at a beach, park, or relaxing after work. At a job interview, you should be showing the company what you think are the right professional clothes to wear during work! If the clothing is either too revealing or gives the impression you have no idea what the word “professional” means, you will most likely never hear from that company again. 7. An old pair of jeans with rips and tears There is such a thing as “designer jeans” used with a business casual look. Before you claim all of your old pairs of jeans are designer jeans, remember you will only be kidding yourself. If a hiring manager sees you walk into a job interview in beat up, old jeans the first impression he/she will get is that you neither care about the job nor have any business sense. You only get away with wearing designer jeans, if your look was business casual. If you want to dress however you want, start your own company. Do not expect others to understand you dress a certain way to look like Mark Zuckerberg. 6. Really short skirts These types clothes are too revealing of your body shape, which will make others uncomfortable. At the same time, you also may appear uncomfortable, as if your clothes are choking you. It may seem appropriate to you, but in general, this is not a safe, professional look for a job interview. 5. Really tight pants Along the same lines, tight pants reveal too much of a person’s shape and can make an interviewer uncomfortable for the same reasons in #6. 4. Clothes revealing too much information Whether you are a man or woman, clothes that reveal body parts and tattoos should never be worn to a professional job interview. You may see some service industry establishments give a free pass on these types of outfits, but the food service industry is a different demon. What you wear to sell drinks to patrons is not the type of outfit you should wear to a job interview. 3. Sweatpants You are not going to the gym, back to sleep, or getting ready to hop on the exercise bike. You are going to a job interview. Even if you are interviewing to work at a company that sells exercise equipment, you will never work in your sweatpants. 2. Crop-tops Showing your navel (aka. belly-button) has both cultural and suggestive implications, some of which may be offensive to the people you are speaking with. You may see that type of outfit on the performance side of the entertainment industry, but it does not belong in a job interview. 1. Too much cologne or perfume Most interviews take place in closed rooms and in close proximity to the hiring manager. When there is little air to breathe and the both of you are talking, the last thing you should do is gas a hiring manager with too much cologne or perfume. The less they can breathe, the more they will remember you for that scent you wore to their job interview. In closing Choosing to wear inappropriate clothing for a job interview can indicate if a job candidate has: Social awareness Professional awareness If what you wear seems to match with what the company finds appropriate, then you may be a culture fit. But if you come across a company and misinterpret how you should have dressed, you may need to reconsider what you believe is appropriate for the industry you want to work in.

Serious Job Perks That Can Boost Your Career

Serious Job Perks That Can Boost Your Career Serious Job Perks That Can Boost Your Career Welcome back to a review on some of the best perks companies can offer working moms!   My previous post was about superb benefits like fully paid maternity leave and childcare support as well as parental support.   This article will cover some serious advancement programs that are offered by some of the best places for working moms to work.  We know that we cant do it all by ourselves so when companies offer serious job perks like the following jump at the opportunity!  We can all use the extra help, especially working moms who are juggling so much. Let’s check them out. Mentoring Programs A mentor is someone who has been around the block within a company.  They really know the in’s and out’s of their company and has a successful track record in their field of expertise.  These types of people seek to share their knowledge with others by being a mentor.   They want to help others succeed so they or upper management starts a program where a mentor can be matched up with a more junior employee (the mentoree).  The objective is to give the mentee a step up by teaching them new skill sets or exposing them to new opportunities to use their strengths.   Think of a mentor as a tutor.   The shortcuts they can show you can help you ace your career.  A working moms lifestyle improves with shortcuts so in your next job search look for this perk to get ahead of the class and in life. Career Counseling When I became a working mom seven years ago I realized I hated my career path.  This kind of situation would have been perfect for career counseling (instead my company hired a coach, which is how I became a working mom coach).   First, a career counselor can take a look at where I’ve been, what projects I’ve worked on and determine my strengths.  Next, we could brainstorm on what I’d like to start working on which could lead me to a new career path.   Performing this kind of work at home is an energy zapper.  Looking for a new job or career can be a full-time job and as a working mom, we have enough work to do.   When a company offers this perk they are more likely to keep their employees which saves everyone money, time and energy.   Cross-Training to Develop Skills Not Directly Related to Your Job So let’s say that a career counselor helps you find a new career path.  How fantastic would it be if your company gave you time out of your work week to train in a new department to learn new skills?   This kind of experience would be incredible!  If you apply for a job in this new department youð already have the skills to do the job.  Most likely you won’t leave the company (this makes the company happy) and you get to start a new career or job. Or maybe this new skill will bring a fresh perspective on things in your current job and your skill sets.   It’s a win-win for everyone with no extra time, money, or energy spent outside of normal working hours on training. Looking out for Your Self-Care During Off-Hours Some of the best places to work are interested in how to protect your downtimes such as creating policies or offering guidance on off-hours use of work-issued smartphones and laptops.  It is the company’s equipment so they’re taking charge about how to use them. Other companies have set policies about email-free weekends.  The company wants workers to refrain from sending non-critical business messages from 8 p.m. Friday until 6 p.m. Sunday.  It is suggested that if an email has to be set use a delay-send mode so the email goes out the next business day.  This is great because the person who wants to send the email can write down what they are thinking so they don’t forget it but they follow the policy with the delay-send. These kinds of companies understand the value in caring for your family as well as your own self-care.  When you feel rested from the daily grind the company knows you’ll come back fresh on Monday and ready to work.

What a simple cup of coffee can teach you about gratitude

What a simple cup of coffee can teach you about gratitude What a simple cup of coffee can teach you about gratitude A.J. Jacobs is a journalist and author of four New York Times bestsellers, including The Year of Living Biblically, Drop Dead Healthy, and The Know-It-All. He is also a contributor to NPR, Esquire, and the New York Times, and has given several renowned TED talks.A.J.’s latest book, Thanks A Thousand: A Gratitude Journey, chronicles his mission to thank everyone in the world who helped make his morning coffee possible. We sat down with A.J. to ask about what inspired this latest adventure, what surprised him most during the process, and how we can all be a little more grateful for the little things we take for granted.1. In two sentences or less, can you sum up the “big idea” of your book? Our coffee â€" as well as every other item in our lives â€" only exists because thousands of things went right on its journey. By acknowledging this, we can fight our brain’s built-in negative bias and be happier and more productive.2. What surprised you the most in your research? The sheer nu mber of people required for something as simple as a cup of coffee. For instance, I thanked the trucker who drove the coffee beans to my local coffee shop. But he couldn’t have done his job without the road, so I had to thank the folks who paved the road. But the road needs yellow lines so the truck doesn’t veer into oncoming traffic. So I thanked the folks who made the paint. It doesn’t just take a village to make a cup of coffee. It takes the world. I try to practice six degrees of gratitude.3. Did an event from your personal life inspire or affect the book?Yes, I can thank my son for the idea. A couple of years ago, I started this ritual before meals. I’d say a prayer of thanksgiving. But I’m not religious, so instead of thanking God, I’d thank some of the people involved in my meal. I’d say “I’d like to thank the farmer who grew these tomatoes. And the cashier at the grocery store who sold me these tomatoes.” Then one day, my 10-year-old son said to me, “Yo u know dad, those people can’t hear you. If you really cared, you’d go and thank them in person.” I said to myself, that’s actually a good book idea. So I spent the next six months traveling the world thanking people in person for my coffee. I focused on coffee because it’s so simple but so important. I couldn’t live without it. Food, shelter, coffee.4. Do you have a favorite quote or motto that guides your life?I like the phrase “Just Do It.” But I would revise it to say: “Just do it, as long as you’ve properly weighed the costs and benefits to both you and society at large.” I know. Not quite as catchy. But I think we need some more rational thinking in this world. The gut can be a dangerous thing. Our president uses his gut, and I’m not a fan of where it’s gotten us.5. What was your most humbling moment?About 15 years ago, I posed for a nude photo that was then printed in Esquire. That was way out of my comfort zone. And probably everyone else’s comfor t zone as well. It happened because the editor in chief of Esquire asked the actress Mary Louise Parker to pose nude for the magazine. She said she would, but on one condition: The editor of the article also pose nude, so he could experience the vulnerability and objectification as well. I was the editor of the article. My boss told me to do it. So I did. I’m actually very impressed with Mary Louise Parker’s idea - it definitely gave me a new understanding of being on the other side of the camera.6. What trivial trick, talent, or feat can you do to impress people?I can do cloverleaf tongue. This is when you can fold your tongue into the shape of a cloverleaf. I just did some research, and it turns out there’s a heated debate over whether this skill is genetic, or if it can be taught. I’m hoping it can be taught. I think everyone has the right to cloverleaf tongue.7. What’s something that is really easy for most people that you find really challenging?Tying shoelaces. I me an, I know how to do it. I just find it super-annoying and irrational. It’s why I use elastic shoelaces. I wish that I could wear Velcro sneakers without hearing jokes about how I’m either a toddler or a 78-year-old Sarasota retiree. But soon I’ll be old enough to pull them off.8. What is one book that you wish everyone in the world would read?Enlightenment Now by Steven Pinker. I don’t agree with all his points, but I endorse the gist: Progress is real. The past was violent, disease-ridden, sexist, homophobic, smelly, you name it. We shouldn’t glorify the past. In fact, it’s dangerous. It breeds nihilism, the feeling that nothing is getting better. Instead, we should be proud of how far we’ve come as a species, and inspired to solve the many, many yet-to-be-solved problems.9. What would you like readers to take away from your book? That being thankful isn’t just a polite thing to do. I think it’s one of the secrets to happiness. In my book, I quote a Benedictine mo nk who says “Happiness doesn’t lead to gratitude. Gratitude leads to happiness.” Also, I’d love for readers to take away the name for that cardboard sleeve that goes around the cup and keeps your fingers from burning. It’s called a “zarf.” That’s crucial information! This article was originally published on Heleo.

As Airbnb grows, this is exactly how much its bringing down hotel prices and occupancy

As Airbnb grows, this is exactly how much it’s bringing down hotel prices and occupancy As Airbnb grows, this is exactly how much it’s bringing down hotel prices and occupancy Airbnb has grown exponentially since its founding in 2008 and is expected to soon go public in an initial public offering that would rank it among the world’s most valuable hotel companies.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!In fact, U.S. consumers spent more money on Airbnb last year than they did on Hilton and its subsidiaries, the second-biggest hotel chain in the world, which was founded a century ago.As an expert in hospitality management, I was curious to know precisely how all this growth has affected the hotel industry â€" and just how scared hotels should be.Exponential growthResearch I recently conducted with colleagues Makarand Mody and Courtney C. Suess studied Airbnb’s impact on hotels’ performance in 10 major U.S. cities to determine how the fast-growing company has influenced three key metrics: room prices, hotel revenues and occupancy rates. Our research i ncluded data from 2008 to 2017 in Boston, Chicago, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, San Francisco and Seattle. In those cities, the number of properties on Airbnb â€" from room shares to entire houses â€" surged from just 51 in its first year of operation to more to 50,000 five years later and to over half a million in 2017.Some of this growth can be attributed to consumers’ increasing demand for authentic lodging experiences â€" in people’s real homes â€" at affordable prices. But another important factor is the lack of regulation Airbnb faced during its first decades, which gave it more flexibility and made it easier to add new properties to its inventory. While this is now changing as cities clamp down, this provided Airbnb with a significant competitive advantage against the hotel industry. Indeed, the typical regulatory framework in cities across America means it can take several years to add a new hotel to the market and requires permits, adherence to safety codes and more tax collection.A significant impactAnd our study showed that these advantages translated into a significant impact on the hotel industry in terms of revenues, prices and occupancy rates.Specifically, we found that every 1% increase in the number of Airbnb properties decreased the average revenue per room by 0.02%. Although this impact seems small, consider Airbnb’s phenomenal year-over-year growth rate when measuring the company’s impact on hotel room revenues. Accordingly, every time Airbnb’s supply doubles â€" which is its average yearly pace since inception â€" hotel revenues fall 2%.While it’s hard to convert this into dollar amounts given the statistical nature of our analysis, we crunched the data on New York City and found that total potential hotel revenue lost to Airbnb may have totaled US$365 million in 2016 alone. The impact on average room prices and occupancy rates was similar but smaller. Room prices fell 0.003% to 0.03% for every 1% incre ase in Airbnb supply, while hotel occupancy declined by 0.008% to 0.1%.Bearing down on luxuryAlthough Airbnb was initially perceived to be a potential threat to economy hotels â€" defined as the bottom 20% in terms of average price â€" we found that Airbnb also had a significant impact on the luxury segment â€" or the top 15%.That suggests the company has successfully pushed to provide more unique experiences across the spectrum, and now there’s a large inventory of more “luxury” experiences on the platform where one can rent designer homes and unique accommodations like cabins, boats and even treehouses â€" all of which tend to be in the higher price range. Our findings also showed that midscale and independent hotels were the least hurt by Airbnb’s increasing supply, probably because both have very similar price points. Another possible reason is that people who chose independent hotels perceived those properties to be more authentic compared to chain hotels, and so those c onsumers were less motivated to switch from independent hotels to Airbnb.Airbnb’s continuing threatThese results collectively suggest that Airbnb appears to have taken a slice of the pie from the hotel industry. The question now is will that phenomenal growth continue?Airbnb continues to grow its supply of properties around the world, and it is clear to me that the company represents a permanent challenge to hotel chains. While there are efforts to regulate the home rentals that makes up the Airbnb properties and other sharing platforms â€" which could curb its growth â€" decisions on how to regulate these platforms have not been straightforward. In other words, hoteliers should continue to fear Airbnb.Tarik Dogru, Assistant Professor of Hospitality Management, Florida State UniversityThis article is republished from The Conversation under a Creative Commons license. Which skills are the best to list on a customer service dispatcher resume? The two main responsibilities of a customer service dispatcher involve interacting with customers and using computers, so it is important that the skills you list relate to those two activities. As shown in our customer service dispatcher resume sample, communication and technical skills should both appear in some form on your skills and qualifications section. You can list soft skills as well as any specific computer programs you are proficient with as long as they are relevant to database and customer management. Leave out computer skills expected from the average profe ssional, such as Microsoft Office.2. What’s the best way to include digital skills on a customer service dispatcher resume?Digital skills play a critical role in the duties of a customer service dispatcher, so take advantage of each section by showcasing your technological abilities. In addition to listing your most impressive digital skills in the skills and qualifications section, like the writer of our customer service dispatcher resume sample, consider mentioning them as accomplishments in the work experience section or as a descriptive sentence or bullet point in your summary statement. Many applicants include a professional summary statement to showcase such experience. It is also acceptable to list computer courses you took in the education section.3. What’s the best format for a resume: PDF, MS Word, or .txt? While many people save and submit their resumes as MS Word documents, this can cause distortion in the format of the document depending on which program the reader c hooses to open the file in. Ensure your reader sees your carefully formatted resume, like our customer service dispatcher resume sample, the way you intended by saving and sending it as a PDF file. However, if the employer requests a specific file format, be sure to follow those instructions.4. How can you separate your customer service dispatcher resume from other candidates’ resumes? The high volume of resumes presented to a hiring manager makes it important for yours to stand out. When you use a more creative format or add a touch of color, it can show your reader that you are creative and able to use computer programs strategically. As you structure your resume, keep your personal touches simple and professional so they don’t distract the reader or take away from what you’ve written. Take a look at our customer service dispatcher resume sample for a visual example. If you find yourself overwhelmed, create a resume in minutes with our resume builder.5. How do you write about hobbies on your resume?Hiring managers usually only spend about six seconds looking at a resume, so you want them to read the important things about your professional accomplishments and industry-related skills rather than how much you enjoy table tennis. If you have a hobby that relates to or displays your superior communication or technological abilities, you can switch the title of the skills section of your resume to skills and interests and list a relevant hobby or two. As you can see in our customer service dispatcher resume sample, including a separate section for hobbies is not usually necessary or encouraged.

Since its inception four years ago, the program has reached nearly 200,000 students. This year alone, more than 90,000 students in more than 1,300 schools in all 50 states have used the INSPIRE program. Several of the sixth-grade students from Joseph B. Cavallaro School consider their responses during the INSPIRE Innovation Investigation activity during the ASME INSPIRE Classroom Connects visit last month. During this years visit, 52 students from Cavallaro School were recognized for successfully completing all 16 modules. The day kicked off with inspiring words from Patti Jo Rosenthal, ASME K-12 programs manager. Almost 140 years ago, ASME was formed to tackle a real, critical problem, Rosenthal said. Because at their heart, engineers are problem solvers problem solvers for good. If something moves or requires energy to make it happen, a mechanical engineer probably designed and developed it. Students then had the opportunity to watch Dream Big, a recently released documentary about the impact of innovative engineers around the world. One part of the film that students particularly enjoyed involved learning about a robotics team from high school that won a national robotics championship. But the highlight of the day was when the students were put into small groups to conduct an ASME INSPIRE Innovation Investigation activity that would give them the chance to think like an engineer. Student teams analyzed a product and technology meant to meet the needs of both developing world communities and traditional consumers. Discussions focused on various ideas on identifying unintended consequences the product or its technology may have, how the product could be improved, and how it could be used in their own communities. Two classes of sixth-graders - 52 students in total - took part in the daylong celebration at Cavallaro School. When the bell rang, the enthusiastic students stayed behind to take photos with their program certificates and ask questions about STEM careers. By pairing the digital STEM program with the in-class visit, students left school with memories of a lifetime and a newfound confidence in being the innovators, developers and problem solvers of the future. ASME INSPIRE is supported through the generosity of the ASME Foundation. For more information on the program, contact Patti Jo Rosenthal, manager, ASME K-12 Programs, at rosenthalp@asme.org.

Questions to Ask in an Informational Interview

Questions to Ask in an Informational Interview Questions to Ask in an Informational Interview 26informational interview. ’ Senior Career Specialist, Brie Reynolds, says “One thing to note about informational interviews is that people typically enjoy talking about themselves and their experiences, so having good questions to ask is the key to keeping the conversation flowing and getting the most out of it.” Lets take a closer look at what to expect. About the Informational Interview Informational interviews differ from a job interview due to the nature of the meeting. Job seekers typically initiate the interview in an effort to gain more knowledge about their desired career or an employer they are interested in working for. There is also unspoken etiquette with informational interviews similar to traditional job interviews. The environment, attire, and questions should be professional (but follow the lead of the person youre talking with and the work environment of their career field), and time constraints should be determined ahead of time to make sure there are no misunderstandings. Additionally, you should be prepared by having done your research on the company and industry, as well as by having a prepared list of questions. Questions to Ask Knowing what to ask is really dependent on what you are looking to learn. If you are interested in a specific industry, you would focus on that. Likewise, you should do the same when trying to get information about a type of career, job, or company. Consider the following questions to ask in an informational interview, and tweak them according to your needs. What is your job title? What would you say are similar or related job titles to yours? What level of education is needed for this job? Is an advanced degree necessary? What were your interests in school? How did that lead to your career choice? What kind of tools/programs/equipment/apps do you use to do your work? Do you have coworkers around you when you are working or is this more independent? How long have you been in this position? What are your duties? How would you categorize your work environment? Is it fast-paced? Do you have daily routine tasks? What is a typical day like for you? What do you like most about your job? What do you like least? What do you wear to work? What skills do you think are required for this career that you think I should know? Are there any specific classes or experiences you would recommend that would prepare me for this type of job? How did your previous work experience or schooling relate to your career? What is the path for advancement in your field? What are some of the biggest challenges you face in your job? What have you learned from some of the jobs you have had? What kind of career advice would you give to a person who is interested in a similar career? How has your job and your career field changed over the years? Is there anything that you would do differently to get into this type of work if given the chance? If you had only one piece of advice to give me, what would it be? Is there another person you’d recommend I talk to about this? If you were job searching right now, what three things would you do? Are there advancement opportunities? If you could go back and change something about your career path, or do something differently, what would it be? Have you learned any great tips from people in your network about careers in this field you could share? How has your job affected your life? What types of personalities fit best with this career? Who do you look up to professionally? How would you describe the potential for this field? What professional organizations, journals, or websites should I look at? Who else would you recommend I talk to? While the informational interview is not necessarily going to lead directly to a new job, it is a great place to start. By getting a personal perspective of the industry, career, or company, you can decide how best to approach your networking and job search activities.
